Community Road Empowerment (CORE) is an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with its headquarters in Japan and registered in Kenya (2008). CORE has operational presence in Africa through regional offices in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burkina Faso. CORE uses appropriate engineering, agricultural and environment-friendly technologies to empower communities to be self-sustaining in economic development. These innovative alternative approaches directly address the needs of the disadvantaged and most vulnerable groups in these communities.

Position: Foremen (Men and Women) (20 posts)

Duty Station: Meru town, Kenya

Job summary

The foreman will support the day-to-day supervision and coordination of road and drainage rehabilitation as directed by the technicians and Project Engineer. He/she will support the CORE engineer and Technicians in site management, technical training and instruction the local language, technical reporting and monitoring of the labour-based interventions involved in the roads rehabilitation.

Key Duties and responsibilities

The foremen shall be required to undertake the following;

1. Assist in conducting engineering surveys for the selected roads

2. Assist in the management of all construction work on site; roads, and structures like culverts and execution of works within the set time frames as set by the project,

3. Lead the workers in technical execution of road rehabilitation activities as guided by the engineer or the technicians,

4. Prepare daily activity report including works done and attendance register of the workers attending to the road work activities,

5. Coordinate and arrange workers into groups during the on the job training as directed by the engineer or the technicians

6. Support in Occupational, Safety and health by ensuring adherence to Covid-19 guidelines and decent work norms.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

The applicant should possess the following competencies

The ideal applicant must be a Kenyan National of demonstrable good conduct ready to take work in Meru town area,

The applicant should be able understand English and express themselves in public,

1. The applicant should have basic construction related knowledge especially in road construction and should possess a diploma or certificate in Civil Engineering or Building and Construction.

2. Proven experience in working and managing casual laborers in road works with demonstrable ability to coach sub-ordinates,

3. Strong empathy skills and genuine care and respect for needs of others especially women and people with special needs,

4. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, sound judgment, planning and team building and facilitating skills.

5. Ability to work in a multicultural context as a flexible and respectful team player.

Duration of Engagement and Terms of Remuneration

The Foremen (Male & Female) will be engaged continuously daily basis for a period not exceeding 40 days. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive daily remuneration per day for the days of work.
